Why Conservation Matters
South Africa is a water-scarce country. Our freshwater ecosystems face serious threats from pollution, habitat destruction, invasive species, and overfishing. Without active conservation, the spots we love today will not be here for the next generation of anglers.
The good news? Anglers are uniquely positioned to lead the charge. We are on the water more than anyone else. We see changes first. And when anglers speak up, people listen.
AnglerHive's mission: We believe that every catch logged, every spot shared, and every conversation had on our platform should contribute to healthier waters — not just bigger bags.
The State of SA Freshwater
These numbers come from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) and the National Freshwater Ecosystem Priority Areas (NFEPA) project. The data is clear: our freshwater ecosystems are under pressure, and action is needed now.
What AnglerHive Is Doing
We are building conservation into the core of AnglerHive, not as an afterthought:
- Catch-and-release tracking: Log your releases and see your personal conservation impact over time
- Species education: In-app guides help you identify native vs. invasive species and understand size and bag limits
- Water quality reports: Community-driven reports on pollution, algae blooms, and habitat changes
- Conservation partnerships: We are actively engaging with organisations like the Federation of South African Flyfishers (FOSAF) and local river care groups
- Invasive species alerts: Get notified when invasive species are detected in your area and learn how to report them
What You Can Do
Every angler can make a difference. Here are practical steps you can take today:
- Know your limits: Stick to legal size and bag limits. They exist for a reason. Download the DAFF regulations and keep them on your phone
- Practice catch-and-release: Especially for threatened species like yellowfish. Use barbless hooks, wet your hands before handling fish, and minimise air exposure
- Report invasive species: If you catch carp, bass, or tilapia in sensitive yellowfish waters, log it on AnglerHive and report it to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment
- Clean your gear: Invasive species and diseases spread via unwashed boats, waders, and tackle. Always clean, drain, and dry your equipment between trips
- Pick up litter: Carry a bag on every trip. If you packed it in, pack it out — and pick up what others left behind
- Support local conservation: Join a river care group, donate to wetland restoration, or volunteer for fish rescue operations
